The news of Lionel Messi's move to Inter Miami has been the talk of the world in the last few hours. The Argentine star made the decision, despite FC Barcelona's attempt to bring him back to his birthplace. Although there might be some rancour, there is no turning back for the former Paris Saint-Germain player.
Inter Miami was born almost 5 years ago, thanks to the expansion that MLS was able to make. Florida is characterised by many Latin American immigrants. They have little interest in baseball or basketball. But there was no soccer franchise in that part of the United States.
It's funny, Inter Miami fans were born before the team itself. Their cheering group is called 'Vice City 86', and it is rumoured that David Beckham paid several fans of Argentinian origin to create it.
Today, the team's situation is untenable. They are in 15th place in the Eastern Conference of the North American league, far behind first place Cincinnati FC. That's why the arrival of the Qatar 2022 World Cup winner is gladdening the hearts of the people of Miami.
Only a few details are missing before Lionel Messi can sign a contract with Inter Miami. The official presentation is expected to take place within two weeks and, if necessary, he will be able to play with the team in the Leagues Cup against Mexican teams.
