Chelsea knew that a 12th-place finish in the Premier League could have potentially irreversible consequences. In addition to having spent more than 600 million euros, the interest of players in joining a team that is not going to fight for European competitions would be totally reduced.
That is why Mauricio Pochettino's role has to be vital in the summer transfer window. He has to make a big analysis of the situation and improve the outlook so that the Blues can be competitive for next season and return to the UEFA Champions League places.
There is one position in the squad that he has not liked for some time. Edouard Mendy has been singled out as one of the culprits for the situation the club has fallen into and the Argentine coach has already sounded out a number of goalkeepers to replace the Frenchman who is a national team player for his country.
Andres Onana was first mentioned as one of the names for a possible swap deal. However, the Inter Milan goalkeeper is happy at his club and has a golden opportunity to win the next UEFA Champions League against Manchester City. And that's why they have their eye on another player who is quite close to that spot.
AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is one of Chelsea's targets to add to the squad. The London club have put €60 million on the table for the Italians, but it looks like they will turn down the offer, as the Frenchman is central to Paolo Maldini's planning for next season.
