England national team’s manager Gareth Southgate surprised in the last few hours by publicly defending Jordan Henderson, who was booed during the game where England achieved a lucrative 1-0 victory against Australia in Wembley, where the fans showed their annoyance with the Henderson inclusion in the team.
The Liverpool legend, who joined Al Ettifaq this summer from Liverpool for around €15 million, has being object of controversy in the national team due to the fact of playing at the Saudi Pro League, which according to the fans would not have the level enough to allow him playing regularly with the England national team at the high level required.
In this sense, Gareth Southgate, wanted to defend Henderson for the whistles he received from his fans. The coach highlighted his importance within the team and gave as an example what he is doing with Jude Bellingham. "His role on and off the pitch is phenomenally important. He's taken the likes of Bellingham under his wing. He's a role model for the group in every part of his work”, he revealed.
In this respect, Southgate remembered the stats performed by Henderson and his crucial role in the team. “I really don’t understand it,” said Southgate. “He’s a player who has won 79 caps for England and his commitment and what he has delivered for England is exceptional. His role in the group on and off the pitch is phenomenally important. Some people decided to boo I really don’t understand what that is for. Come on – we play Italy on Tuesday and let’s get behind this team”, said Southgate.
