Manchester United’s coach Erik Ten Hag was seen visibly annoyed by the questions about his possible disagreement with the French defender Raphael Varane, who has been relegated to a secondary role in the squad in the last few weeks, when the Dutchman has given priority to Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire ahead of him.
In this sense, the media wanted to ask the Dutchman about it in his last press conference with the club ahead of their next game against Everton in Goodison Park on the thirteenth day of the 2023/2024 Premier League season, and the manager has confronted the question with a very strong and direct message to his critics and to Varane himself.
The Dutchman, who said to be really happy to count on the French center back in his team, revealed the great competence existent in the squad, rejecting the possibility of having an internal conflict with the French defender. “I don't know what you're talking about. It's just rumors but there is internal competition”, he said.
In this sense, Erik Ten Hag revealed that “when you have to decide between two players who are brilliant - Varane and Harry Maguire - then you have to make a choice", according to the Dutchman, the main reason why the French player has been relegated to the bench in the last few games.
