Manchester United saved a crucial point from Anfield after drawing 0-0 in their game against Liverpool on the seventeenth day of the 2023/2024 Premier League season, where the Reds were dominant but struggled to disarm the solid defensive system set by Erik Ten Hag, whose team was full of important absences to face their main British rival.
Liverpool dominated the game from the start, as the Reds began the clash with a great intensity in their play, creating several chances that were well defended by Manchester United’s defense. The Merseyside team had their first opportunity on the boots of Dominik Szoboszlai with a strong shot from outside the box, and Mohamed Salah had two more clear chances before the game reached the halftime.
The second half started in a similar way as the first half did, as the Reds led the game again, proposing and controlling on the ball, while Manchester United waited for their opportunity to develop a counterattack; willing to secure at least a point from the game against their rivals. Precisely in one of them, the visitors had their first great chance at the 54th with a run of Garnacho, which was saved by Alisson Becker. At the 60th, Jürgen Klopp gave entry to Joe Gomez and Cody Gakpo for Szoboszlai and Gravenberch, and Liverpool intensified their mobility to disarm Ten Hag’s defensive system.
Arnold stept up to the midfield and had a clear chance at the 66th, and Hojlund responded with the greatest chance in the game for Manchester United with a volley from the far post inside the box. Marcus Rashford joined the game at the 70th to replace Garnacho on United’s left wing, while Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott replaced Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez at the 79th. Salah had a clear chance in a quick counterattack at the 93rd, and Diogo Dalot stopped him on a foul, receiving a red card. The Reds tried to have a last clear chance which never arrived, and Manchester United saved a point from their visit to Anfield, while Jürgen Klopp’s side was dropped from Premier League’s leadership in favor of Arsenal.
