The Champions League current format will be totally changed for the next season, when the new “Swiss Format” will be started with important changes in the competition that many fans and media have already labeled as dangerous for the rhythm and the excitement towards the tournament.
In this sense, it would be worth remembering that a year ago, the UEFA Executive Committee convened in Vienna this new format, giving the green light to apply it from the 2024-2025 season, when the competition will step into new territory.
The main measure to be taken will be the expansion of the competition, whose new model will have 36 teams, saying goodbye to the model of eight groups of four teams, which will be changed to a league of 36 teams. That doesn’t mean that every team will play each other, as each club will play eight fixtures, four at home and four away.
Fixtures will be determined at the beginning of the season, with teams being split into four pots of nine, where Pot 1 will consist of the side that wins the Champions League this season and the eight sides with the best coefficients, while Pots 2 to 4 will also be ordered on coefficients. Each team will be drawn to play two teams from each pot, one at home and one away. So each team in Pot 1, featuring the biggest clubs in Europe, will play two other sides from the same pot.
The final table will determine who qualifies for the knockout stage, with the teams that finish in the top eight positions automatically reaching the last 16 while the clubs that finish from ninth to 24th, will enter a two-legged playoff to earn the right to enter the knockout stage, and teams that finish 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the competition without option to join the Europa league.
