Manchester United’s coach Erik Ten Hag tried to stop the controversy created around his keeper Andre Onana in the last few days, as the manager himself was revealed to have given an ultimatum to the Cameroonian player asking him for no more errors and warning him that he would be about to lose his main role as a first goalkeeper in the squad.

In this sense, the Dutchman wanted to publicly defend the player in front of the media in the club’s press conference ahead of their next away game in the Premier League against Newcastle in St. James’ Park, which could be crucial for the Red Devils as they will face a direct rival for the Top four of the league.

United’s manager was asked for the ultimatum given to Onana and he skipped the topic pointing to the player’s reaction to his bad performances as a proof of the Cameroonian’s commitment to improve in the next few games. “You have seen how he is reacting to a bad performance like in Munich, at Burnley he was outstanding. He is a strong character, he has a personality and he will deal with it”, he explained.

Continuing with his arguing, the Dutchman admitted that Onana had severe errors against Galatasaray, but he wanted to highlight the keeper’s great performances with United and focus on the team’s transitions to explain the goals conceded. “Eliminate individual errors, transition but we can sort this out and I would be more concerned if we didn't play well”, he said, surprisingly adding that “Andre Onana is the second best keeper in the league”.
