Manchester United’s coach Erik Ten Hag surprised in the last club’s press conference ahead the game of Manchester United against Tottenham for the second day of the 2023/2024 Premier League season. The Dutchman was asked about the team’s issues in the midfield in the last game against Wolverhampton, and he did not hesitate to reveal the plans he has for improving that team’s area.

In this sense, Ten Hag analyzed the role developed by Casemiro and Mason Mount in the last game, explaining that both players performed a new role, and they still need to work on several aspects of their game, expecting they can set it up soon. The Dutchman took the chance to defend Mason Mount, who had been criticized for his poor stats during the game, and Ten Hag said that the English player’s technical ability and good vision of the game would help him to develop his best game.

In this respect, Mason Mount filled a lower position to that he is used to, and Ten Hag did not have any doubt in backing the player. “He knows how to handle the ball. All the ingredients are in place to make it happen", said Ten Hag, visibly confident of improving the mistakes the team had against Wolverhampton.

Ten Hag would have an unexpected alternative in mind for the team’s midfield

However, there was also a surprising statement by the Dutchman when talking about the team’s midfield solutions, that was totally unexpected but thrilled the fans according to the journal Manchester Evening Standard. Ten Hag would be planning to use Kobbie Mainoo in the team, and he thinks he could be the best option to perform the role of low midfield ahead of Casemiro and Mount in the long term.In this sense, it is worth remembering that Mainoo would be absent for one more month recovering himself from an ankle injury suffered during the United preseason in USA.
